Spring Formal

Feeling extra puny on this fine Friday spring morning today—humour is my best defense against stress. Spring is REALLY here and the way the rays of the sun streamed into my room woke me up with a smile. What can I say, I love the sun. Yesterday, I led a group of the most adorable second graders through the school’s art museum, hence the formality of the outfit.

My pair of chinos is going to be a huge staple of my wardrobe come spring and summer. The twill fabric is made from cotton, so it's breathable for the hot humid weather ahead. I also don’t like to wear jeans too much in general—I find it can be something of style crutch to rely on jeans too often. I have nothing against denim per se, but wearing pants made of other materials (ex. chinos in the spring/summer, corduroy in the fall/winter) allows the individual to experiment more with colours and textures. Jeans are so ubiquitous that the simple act of wearing any other material makes you stand out, and makes a basic outfit (such as the one presented here) more visually interesting than it would be otherwise.

This pair of chinos is a relatively new addition to my wardrobe—it’s not the same pair as the one seen in my ‘Cashmere and Pearls’ post from before. The last pair was bought hastily over the internet, and while it fit relatively okay considering the circumstance, it was not 100% satisfactory. If it’s a piece of clothing that you will wear often, I think it’s fine that you should seek better alternatives if you're not happy with it, seeing as its imperfections will annoying you. Every. Single. Time. It's okay to indulge yourself in finding “the perfect _______ ” this way : it's not worth torturing yourself daily (or however frequent you wear this particular piece) over the little things. I have since donated my old pair. I can’t wait to show just how seamlessly this pair of chinos works with other pieces of my wardrobe, to many degrees even better than my current small collection of jeans.

If there is something that bothers me about personal style blogs, it’s not the fact that they are so commercialized per se (though that is still a factor in itself), it’s that the bloggers themselves fail to provide a bigger context and insight as to how they paired the different pieces together. Neither do they provide any sort of examination of their stylistic vision, whether their particular outfit of the day is in line with that thinking or not etc. For a person who can barely cook to save her life, I read a ton of food blogs. I find the very best food blogs (Orangette, Poor Man's Feast, Local Milk, Not Without Salt, Manger, to name a few on the top of my head) not only provides the most beautiful photos or the tastiest recipes, but they all craft such wonderful stories to give you personal insight into their process during which the food is prepared. Of course, they all paint a highly romanticized relationship with food that’s not realistic, but it demonstrates how food can be personal and meaningful.

I don’t see why personal style bloggers cannot adapt the same approach for their blogs, in trying to tell better stories through their clothes. There is so much tradition and meaning behind clothing. If there was none to be found, I highly doubt there would be such institutions such as the Costume Institute at the Met devoted entirely to the exhibition, preservation and research of such stories. Perhaps it is all the more difficult when you are a slave to fashion and to the different mandates of seasonal trends—you’ve never given yourself the opportunity to understand yourself and what YOU really want from clothing. The aforementioned food bloggers and their audiences skews older than your average fashion blogger but the stories and ideas are not bound to age. It’s sad to see so little self-examination in your average personal style blog. Are there stories to be found in H&M and Forever 21? (Edit: I know I sound entirely facetious in this last line but I'm actually quite serious.)

My Personal Take on Basics

For the longest time, I've restrained myself from posting too many personal style ‘outfit’ type photos. The reason is because this blog is a reaction against the explosion of personal style blogs within the realm of the fashion blogosphere, which has led to a severe lack of more intelligent and interesting fashion conversations.

Over time though, I do realize that there is value in personal style blogs. One can plainly see just how that individual translates their theories and ideas about their own personal style in real life. After reading all my extensive writings and ramblings about basics, it only makes sense that you should see some examples of my own personal take on them.

Peacoat Redux

I did say that I would be taking better photos to showcase the peacoat I bought from Uniqlo a while ago, didn't I? Well here you go, as seen wearing it while exploring historical Old Town Alexandria, a short metro ride from DC away.

Spring break was short but sweet. Now that I'm back at school, this means that blogging will resume as usual. I definitely missed reading people's blogs and hope to pick up right where I left. I look forward to sharing some other photos of my spring break very soon. Have a great start to the week!

+ COAT, UNIQLO. PURSE, ZARA KIDS. SCARF, GIFT. KHAKIS, UNIQLO. LIPSTICK, CHILI FROM MAC.

A Wardrobe of Staples

Lumpy oatmeal sweaters. Washed out jeans. Worn out duck boots. A neutral warm palette. Inspired by Miss Sophie, this post features more or less what I wear nowadays. Even though I have the most wonderful navy pea coat, I still find myself gravitating towards my trusty old heavy duty G-STAR Raw coat. It's partially because I am so used to wearing it but also because it's so easy to clean and maintain. The pea coat is much less hardy and not at all suited for harsh winter storms (especially as of late).

It's been surprisingly difficult to identify what are my wardrobe staples this season per se post-curation, now that every item is indispensable and is regularly worn on a rotating basis. There are no extra leftover statement pieces that I wear only for the one event now and then. Interestingly, I guess this is how you know you've got the basics down pat that each piece of clothing becomes a true workhorse.

A Very Pea Update

I finally got a wool blended pea coat that I'm absolutely head over heels in love with from...*drum roll*...UNIQLO. Bet you were SO surprised that I would find something at Uniqlo for my liking. I managed to squeeze in a few hours of shopping time before I had to board the bus back to school, so I got to visit their North American flagship on 5th & 53rd and it is glorious. I spent two hours there trying on everything. I love every aspect of the coat:
  • there is enough weight in the material that it feels substantial
  • good structure
  • well tailored to my body
  • in a gorgeous navy blue
  • on sale
To be honest at first I was trying to find the wool blended cocoon coat that I had my eye on already in HK but there was none in my size. In comparison it was a bit more trendy Isabel Marant-esque and I'm sure I would have loved the coat, however I'm glad that even though I wasn't able to get it, it led me to this wonderfully divine traditional coat that basically is now the cherry on top of my über PITA (preppy-ivy-traditional-americana) wardrobe. Dead Fleurette wrote about sticking to what works in terms of her relationship with APC, I have to say I have the same with Uniqlo (only the NYC stores though sadly). It's funny because I think it all began with my overzealous pursuit for great basics even though I have hardly your model petite Japanese woman body except now I have convinced they scale things very differently for their North American market. I do hope to learn more about Uniqlo as a business operation in the future as I think as a regular customer I should learn more about the origin of my purchases. Being an informed consumer never hurts.

*if you were wondering why the photos are so overexposed it is because it was taken by a good friend who is, alas, not so experienced (if at all) with photography. At least she's fabulous at organic chemistry?! For all intents and purposes they serve to showcase the coat well enough though in the future I will be sure to find opportunities to photograph the coat better.

'Tis the Season for Glitter

Instead of studying for my finals quietly at home last night, I went out to dinner with my debate team. I'm still working on the In Vogue review as promised, but it's taking a while because I need to take all the screen caps myself. Meanwhile...doesn't my friend M look amazing? I love her attention to detail: the gold bow, the gold bangles with gold glittery nails to match.

Living Life on the Slow Lane

Today is a slow day of hand-me-downs. I've just recently been gifted a pair of sweet knee high suede boots from a dear friend and since it's been a while since my last 'outfit' post along with finals looming ahead of me, I thought it would be nice to have a light post after the text-heavy ones all November.

What Storm Have We Here

Jacket, Barbour; Shirt and Jeans, Uniqlo; Boots, L.L. Bean.
I'm definitely feeling the effects of global warming this Fall, what with the increased number of tornado or hurricane alerts, with more torrential rain and the strongest winds I've experienced so far in my three years of studying in MA. The turbulent weather calls for the toughest of my waterproof gears: my beloved Barbour Bedale, my trusty pair of L.L. Duck boots and my impossibly strong Filson messenger bag. Crikey. And off to the library I go.

Lazy Business Casual

"Lazy business casual" is how I would describe what I wore today to my school's financial accouting and modeling boot camp. It's amazing how I still manage to find myself staring at the computer again after having to sit in front of the scene learning to read 10-Ks and complete models in Excel. It was from 8am-5pm, which is by this nocturnal college student's opinion, WAY TOO EARLY. Almost ungodly early really, considering it is the weekend and the earliest classes that I have usually are at 9am. Halfway through I seriously questioned myself why was I doing this, since I pretty much have zero interest in investment banking but ultimately it was for a new concentration at my school that I wanted. These days I've been wearing my Uniqlo sweaters on a non-stop basis; it's to no one's surprise that when I woke up bleary eyed this morning, I grabbed the first things I saw: a sweater and my new structured navy skirt (which is also from Uniqlo).

I'm not a formal slacks person purely because the structured skirt has far more versatility, which is what I'm gunning for when shopping these days. Formal slacks look too pant suit-y for my liking and I find the pairing of the formal slack with an informal top like a tank looks a little off. I plan for this navy skirt to truly become a major workhouse for my wardrobe. As for the shoes, the label on the sole has since rubbed off and I've had this from junior year in high school so I have no idea where I got it.

I just logged back into Tumblr to try and revive my econ side blog, A Double Coincidence of Wants, and holy cow has Tumblr changed. While I try to relearn how to use it, if you're asking what I'm reading this days, it's George Magnus's new paper (found via FT Alphaville).

Granville Island

Vancouver has recently been hit by the heatwave, making it so hot that it was unbearable to go out until today. Cue Netflix marathon of Dexter. I always love going back to Granville Island, despite it becoming more and more touristy as the years go on, as its the stuff of my childhood. The summers spent at Arts Umbrella and when I got a little older, to venture off to the market or the fish and chips shack for lunch. You know, the good life.

When I back this time round, I'm glad to know little has changed. Okay the slide is no longer there, but at least there's a cool new wheel swing in its place. Predictably, I'm wearing my old breton stripe top with my new UNIQLO skinny jeans, which I lurve. A great addition might I add, to my mini denim collection.

Lil' sis on the other hand, went the simple '90s denim jacket + white tee route. I hope my love for basics has rubbed off on her. Here's to wishful thinking.

I am usually not so blatantly nationalistic/all that patriotic but it is things like this makes me appreciate the fact that I am Canadian. Also for the fact the red looks so pretty against the cornfield blue of the sky.

VanDusen Botanical Garden

VanDusen Botanical Garden is easily one of the most beautiful places and therefore also one of my favourite places, in Vancouver. It can most definitely hold its own against the more better known botanical gardens, such as the one in Brooklyn. It's smaller but that also means that there is denser collection of flowers, which means the scenery all the more gorgeous. The fact that there are random sculptures sprinkled all over the place as part of the ongoing art exhibition makes for an interesting experience.

Perhaps wearing a pink sweater to go the gardens was a bit too obvious a choice, but pastels > neon any day. I was a bad patient today in not wearing my special strap on boots, since I thought wearing just one white chuck would make the other strangely pristine in comparison.

Being amongst the roses reminded me how I was once the Queen of Hearts in the my sixth grade production of the musical 'Alice in Wonderland'. Thank god the role did not require any singing abilities apart from shouting "off with her head". I feel bad for not writing lengthier pieces, so hopefully more will be coming shortly very soon!
